Do You Have the Hobbyist Work Ethic?

A hobby is defined as a common pastime activity which is carried out for fun, usually during one’s free leisure time, and not professionally or for payment, and usually not at the expense of one’s welfare. Hobbies include playing card games, building models, sewing, riding animals, or exploring foreign countries. A hobby can range from something small such as a toothbrush custom-made for a special friend, to something much larger such as building an entire house from scratch, replicating a particular city, or discovering the habits of an indigenous tribe. Hobbies are generally for fun and enjoyment rather than for achieving specific goals. However, some hobbies can help achieve certain skills, for example, building model cars helps develop certain aspects of creativity, while playing card games improves one’s ability to reason.

Modeling is a broad category that includes a wide variety of activities related to constructing life-size or exact replicas. Card Games is one of the most popular hobbies among youth, as it helps them learn the basics of counting, addition, subtraction, and others. Hobbies related to playing model airplanes or automobiles are also widely used among youngsters. Please help improve your spelling!

Hobbies, like interests, serve to bring your mind into a state of being focused on specific activities. In order to highlight your strong skills in the field you wish to work in, you should take the time to focus on your hobbies, both as a participant and a spectator. For example, if you have strong interests in automobiles, you should include pictures of your favorite auto brands or styles, or you can even take simple car trips on weekends with the family. This shows that your interests are broad and not limited to a single area.

If your hobby is something physical, please help improve your resume by highlighting your high level of physical activity. Can you jog regularly? Are you in excellent shape? If you swim often or have a fitness club membership, it is a positive aspect that the hiring manager can see in your application. Strong interest and enthusiasm for any given activity is a key component to achieving success in any occupation.

Hobbies like collecting are excellent areas to highlight in your resume, but please keep in mind that these types of activities are often not discussed in an interview. As previously mentioned, it can be hard to convince a hiring manager that you have the work ethic to work in their company, so listing your hobbies in a sentence or two on your application will give a manager a better idea of your work ethic. Please understand that not all hobbies include collecting as a hobby. In fact, collecting things as a hobby can lead to more money as you get older and must sell or trade items. Please be honest about what type of collection you have in order to avoid wasting time and effort in collecting items that do not belong to you!

It should be clear by now that hobbies do not always include collecting. For example, if you are interested in art or history, you can list this as a hobby on your resume along with your love of animals. You may also include other hobbies that pertain to your job such as travel or dance. Regardless of what type of hobby you have, if you have strong work ethic and enjoy your work, you will find it easy to develop into a successful hobbyist!
