How to Use Humor in a Situational Situtation

Are you having a hard time finding funny things to say? Well, I have some news for you. There is no such thing as a stupid question or a dumb question. In other words, never ask a question that will get you another response from your subject.

In our highly evolved society, it has become taboo to make fun of someone. Instead, we try to make fun of the target or topic of the discussion. A few short years ago this would have gotten us nowhere. A joke or observation would have been funny, but not an answer or solution. That is why we are still sitting around with the same tired group of people wondering how come somebody doesn’t see something funny.

Humor is one of those things that everybody enjoys. It is contagious! When you have a few moments of humorous quality in your life you will see a change in the way you interact with others. Take a moment to look at someone else that has had a major upset or conflict in their life and notice how they laugh. The first time you see their attitude change and the look on their face you will know that they found some humor in what happened to them. This is all it takes to bring smiles to their faces.

So how do you know if what you are observing is really funny? Well, there are two standard types of laughter; real-life examples of humor and the fake variety. Real-life examples of humor are those situations where the situation is funny and amusing to you, and you find yourself smiling. Fake laughter, on the other hand, is whenever you feel embarrassed by something or someone. So if you are laughing at yourself then you are probably having a real-life example of a funny or amusing situation.

For example, you can take a situation that you find to be funny and make a joke out of it. When I was a child I used to watch a program called Forks and Treads. This show featured an old woman that liked to tell long stories about her past. I would often laugh every time she would tell a story, but then one day when she was telling a sad story about how her dog had died, I realized that this old woman was actually making fun of herself. That she was using humor to disguise her sadness was not for me to laugh at, so I decided to let her have her laugh at herself instead.

Incongruity, on the other hand, is when two or more things that normally wouldn’t seem to belong together seem to fit together in an amusing way. Take a car and ride in it; that’s one example of incongruity. Another is when two people in different parts of the world who would never cross paths will. This type of incongruity can be used to bring a seemingly ridiculous notion into focus, or to bring a situation to a lighter one. There are endless ways to use and abuse incongruity in humor. The key is to know when to do it, as well as what to do in light of where you find the humor in the situation.
